Making Irish Whiskey Cocktails
Tullamore D.e.w. vs. Jameson Whiskey
When Irish Whiskey comes to mind, most people probably think of Jameson.
I know I do. When I want whiskey, it’s usually Jameson. So, when my dad asked me if I’d ever tried Tullamore D.e.w. I was intrigued. He said he liked it better than Jameson. The next time Mike and I were at Trader Joe's we decided to pick up a bottle and give it a shot.
And we did exactly that. We drank it straight and thought it was great!
Tullamore has its own smooth flavor that I think tastes better paired with ginger beer versus Jameson, which I like with Coke. Although I still prefer Jameson, there is no comparison. Both have unique properties of flavor and sweetness. Liquorlaboratory writes a great analysis if you want to learn more about these popular Irish whiskeys.
The Irish Buck cocktail popped up in Food & Wine after I looked up recipes to make for March. It featured Tullamore D.e.w. with ginger beer and it sounded like a winner.

What to Eat
There were several Irish-inspired dishes that looked amazing on Food and Wine’s list of 31 Recipes to Make for March. I made a delicious mustard butter on top of salmon toast that went well with the Irish Buck. The following week, I made a tasty Leek and Potato Soup that also paired well with the cocktail.
Making the Drink
With basil as a garnish, the drink is made with Tullamore D.e.w., honey syrup, and lemon juice, and then topped with ginger beer.
I believe ginger beer is one of the best cocktail mixers. It pairs well with many different spirits and it’s easy on the stomach. Ginger beer is a big influencer on my cocktail choice when I’m out. I used Reed’s Extra, which is always easy to find.
St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail
Although perfect for St. Paddy’s Day, the Irish Buck cocktail can be enjoyed any time of year. The ingredients are easy to get and any bartender can put together this drink quickly. The Irish Buck would be a great addition to any bar and restaurant’s cocktail menu.
