Food, Drinks, and Little Plates

To be historically accurate, Little Plate came before my social media company, Little Social.

It comes from something my mom used to say when preparing lunch or dinner the day after we’d had a party. She would pull out all the party leftovers and arrange them on the counter. Sometimes she would add bread and condiments or include leftover desserts. Everything was set up buffet style and she’d tell us to make ourselves a little plate.

I took the term “little plate” with me into adulthood. I shopped for groceries like I was assembling deli platters. When I had the chance to visit Italy and Spain, tapa bars and aperitivo hours blew my mind. I fell in love. The way we socialized at odd hours with interesting foods & drinks felt like the natural way to be. I learned, like cows, I am a grazer.

I can’t recall the first time I used the term with my husband. It must have been early on because we often put together a little plate as a late-night snack or when traditional dinner is not an option. Making a little plate has become a regular part of our lives, and technically it’s usually a large plate. We even brought the theme into our wedding by giving all the guests a literal little plate to take home.

We wrapped all the little plates with ribbon. It was a sweet thought, but in hindsight, those plates were probably a pain to take back home. Sorry guests! It was a good Event Planner 101 moment for me.

What does Little Plate mean to me?

First, it reminds me of the celebratory memories I have with my family. They love to party. And when the party fog has dissipated, we get to relax and enjoy the leftover feast of our labor.

Second, I love any snack n’ socialize situation. If I’m out or entertaining at home and I have a little plate in one hand and a cocktail in the other, I know I’m enjoying myself.

People are fantastic at coming together creatively. That great feeling of friends socializing around food, drinks, and music; I believe brings out the best in us. Little Plate is everything about creating those memorable experiences. Whether it's for my friends or just for me.
